Our take on Rio

Carlos Saldanha's 2011 animated adventure follows Blu, a domesticated macaw raised in Minnesota who never learned to fly, believed to be the last male of his species. When word arrives of a lone female in Rio de Janeiro, he and his human companion travel south, only for smugglers to upend the plan and launch a colorful chase toward freedom. Built for families, it blends comedy, gentle romance and a splash of adventure against a carnival-bright Brazilian backdrop full of music and movement. Younger viewers will enjoy the birds' odd-couple banter and vivid animation, while the tropical setting and lively energy make it easy, cheerful company for all ages.
