Our take on Shrek the Third

Chris Miller's 2007 animated adventure sends Shrek back out on a quest after the King of Far Far Away dies and the reluctant ogre suddenly faces the throne. Wanting only the quiet of his swamp, Shrek sets off with friends to find another heir who can rule in his place. It keeps the series' mix of fairy-tale spoofery, broad family comedy and gentle character warmth, this time folding in Shrek's nerves about impending fatherhood. Aimed squarely at families and fans of the earlier films, it's a comfortable, colorful ride rather than a reinvention. Enjoyable for younger viewers, with enough winking humor to keep grown-ups amused.
