Our take on Shrek

Andrew Adamson's 2001 animated adventure sends a grumpy green ogre on an unexpected quest. Shrek would rather be left alone in his swamp, but circumstances push him to rescue a princess guarded by a fire-breathing dragon, saddled with a chatterbox donkey he never asked for. What follows blends adventure, comedy and family warmth, poking fun at fairy-tale conventions while quietly honouring them. The gruff hero and his motor-mouthed sidekick give the film its odd-couple charm, and the humour works on two levels for children and grown-ups alike. It suits families wanting bright, irreverent fun with a soft centre, and anyone fond of animation that winks at the stories it borrows from.
