Martin Scorsese works in a mystery-thriller register here, following Teddy Daniels, a World War II soldier turned U.S. Marshal, as he investigates the disappearance of a patient from a hospital for the criminally insane. His inquiry is steadily undermined by troubling visions and a doctor whose motives he cannot read. Scorsese leans into dread rather than action, using storm-battered atmosphere, dreamlike detours and a creeping sense that nothing on the island can be trusted. It's a puzzle-box drama built on unease and unreliable perception, best approached without knowing too much. It suits viewers who enjoy slow-burn psychological mysteries and don't mind an ending that unsettles more than it reassures.
