Our take on Starship Troopers
Paul Verhoeven's 1997 science-fiction film charts the rise of young soldier Johnny Rico, from raw recruit to non-commissioned officer to officer, against an interstellar war between humanity and an arachnoid species known as the Bugs. On its surface a big, ferocious action-adventure of Mobile Infantry combat, it carries Verhoeven's characteristic edge: the gung-ho military spectacle doubles as pointed satire of propaganda and blind patriotism. It suits viewers who want spectacle with a sardonic undercurrent, and who can enjoy relentless bug-hunt battles while catching the film's colder joke about the machine that sends young people to fight. Loud, kinetic and slyer than it first appears.
