Joel Coen's 1998 comedy-crime tale follows Jeffrey 'The Dude' Lebowski, a Los Angeles slacker who wants nothing more than to bowl and sip White Russians. Mistaken for a wheelchair-bound millionaire of the same name, he's dragged into a tangle of nihilists, adult-film producers, ferrets, an errant toe and large sums of money. It's a shaggy, deadpan riff on the crime caper, more interested in oddball digressions and quotable rhythm than tidy plotting. The humor is dry, profane and often absurd, rewarding patience over payoff. Viewers who savor character over story, and who enjoy a mystery that never quite behaves, tend to adopt it as a lifelong favorite.
