Wes Anderson's 2007 comedy-drama sends three estranged American brothers on a train across India, ostensibly on a spiritual quest to reconnect a year after they stopped speaking. Predictably, their carefully planned pilgrimage lurches off the rails, tangled up with over-the-counter painkillers, Indian cough syrup and a burst of pepper spray. It carries all of Anderson's hallmarks: precise symmetrical framing, deadpan delivery, wistful melancholy and grief hiding beneath the whimsy. This is an intimate, small-scale story about family bonds rather than plot, and it rewards viewers already fond of the director's meticulous, bittersweet style.
