Larry Charles and Sacha Baron Cohen aim their satire squarely at tyranny in this 2012 comedy. The premise follows a preening dictator who supposedly risks everything to keep democracy from ever reaching the country he has so lovingly oppressed. It's broad, deliberately offensive, gag-driven farce that swings hard and often, trusting shock and absurdity to carry each scene. The politics are a target rather than a lecture, and the humor lives entirely on your appetite for provocation. Viewers who enjoy crude, envelope-pushing comedy and Baron Cohen's fearless commitment will find plenty to laugh at. Anyone wary of tastelessness or looking for subtlety should steer well clear of El dictador.
