Our take on The Equalizer
Antoine Fuqua's 2014 action-crime thriller builds a lone-avenger story around a man trying to leave violence behind. McCall believes he has buried his mysterious past in a quiet new life, until he meets Teri, a young woman held under the thumb of ultra-violent Russian gangsters. Unable to look away, he unearths dormant skills and turns them on anyone who preys on the defenseless, casting himself as protector for those with nowhere else to turn. Fuqua stages the payback with methodical, hard-edged control. It suits viewers who like disciplined, morally clear vigilante action and a stoic, capable hero. Come for the reckoning, stay for the measured, purposeful tension.
