Our take on The Godfather

Coppola's 1972 masterpiece turned a mafia saga into a tragedy about family, power and the corruption of the American dream. Its deliberate pace, operatic violence and Michael Corleone's slow moral collapse set the template every crime epic since has chased. If The Godfather drew you in, you want scope and weight rather than action: Scorsese's GoodFellas, Leone's Once Upon a Time in America and City of God share its generational sweep and its fascination with how ordinary people are pulled into organized crime.
