Baz Luhrmann's 2013 adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Long Island novel filters the Jazz Age through his signature maximalism, all glitter, motion and swooning excess. Midwesterner Nick Carraway is drawn into the lavish orbit of his mysterious neighbour, Jay Gatsby, before the cracks in that nouveau riche fantasy widen into obsession, madness and tragedy. As drama and romance, it is deliberately heightened, prizing spectacle and longing over restraint, which will thrill some viewers and overwhelm others. It suits those who want a bold, emotionally loud take on a familiar story rather than a hushed literary one, and it stands perfectly well on its own.
