Following Smaug's attack on Laketown, Bilbo and the dwarves try to defend Erebor's mountain of treasure from others who claim it: the men of the ruined Laketown and the elves of Mirkwood. Meanwhile an army of Orcs led by Azog the Defiler is marching on Erebor, fueled by the rise of the dark lord Sauron. Peter Jackson's 2014 fantasy closes his Hobbit trilogy after Smaug's assault on Laketown, as Bilbo and the dwarves try to hold Erebor's mountain of treasure against rival claimants: the displaced men of Laketown and the elves of Mirkwood. As they quarrel, an army of Orcs led by Azog advances, driven by the rising dark lord Sauron, forcing dwarves, elves and men toward an uneasy alliance with Bilbo caught at the centre. This is the most battle-driven, spectacle-heavy entry of the trilogy, built for viewers already invested in Middle-earth. Newcomers should watch the earlier films first; devotees will find a sweeping, effects-laden finale.
