Yorgos Lanthimos's 2015 film blends comedy, drama and romance into a deadpan dystopia. In a near-future ruled by The City's laws, single people are sent to The Hotel and given forty-five days to find a romantic partner; those who fail are transformed into an animal and released into The Woods. From that absurd premise, Lanthimos mounts a dry, unsettling satire of coupledom, conformity and the pressure to pair off.
