Our take on The Machinist
Brad Anderson's 2004 psychological thriller follows Trevor, a lathe operator whose crippling insomnia begins to warp the boundary between what is real and what his exhausted mind conjures. A stranger only he seems to notice shadows him at work and home, and the film patiently lets that paranoia curdle into dread. It leans on mood, unease and a slow accumulation of small wrongnesses rather than shocks, so it rewards patient viewers who like their thrillers cold, cerebral and morally uneasy. If you enjoy character-driven mysteries where the puzzle lives inside one damaged man's head, this bleak, tightly focused drama is worth seeking out.
