Our take on The Magnificent Seven

Antoine Fuqua's 2016 western reworks a familiar template: a frontier town, Rose Creek, is seized by the greedy industrialist Bartholomew Bogue, and its cornered residents, led by Emma Cullen, hire bounty hunter Sam Chisolm to fight back. Chisolm assembles an eclectic band of gunslingers, and the story marches steadily toward the deadly showdown its shape demands. Squarely an action adventure, it trades in loyalty, reluctant heroism and the price of taking a stand, more than in surprise. It's a solid pick for viewers who like classic ensemble westerns with clear stakes and a mounting sense of confrontation, and who enjoy watching mismatched fighters become a unit.
