Our take on The Mummy

Stephen Sommers reimagines the classic monster tale as a rollicking adventure in this 1999 spectacle. Set in 1920s Egypt, it follows dashing legionnaire Rick O'Connell, who stumbles upon the buried ruins of Hamunaptra and unwittingly helps awaken Imhotep, a high priest cursed three thousand years ago for a forbidden love and now bent on unleashing eternal doom. Sommers blends swashbuckling action, screwball humor and pulpy horror into breezy popcorn entertainment, leaning on charisma and pace rather than dread. It suits viewers who want old-fashioned treasure-hunting thrills with a wink, and anyone nostalgic for adventure films built on chemistry, sand-swept vistas and gleeful supernatural mayhem.
