Shane Black funnels his gift for barbed banter and morally grubby heroes into this 1970s Los Angeles crime comedy, where a mismatched private eye and a strong-arm enforcer poke at the death of a fading adult-film star and stumble into something bigger. The pleasure lies less in the mystery than in the sun-baked period texture, the deadpan timing, and two leads sniping their way through a case neither fully understands.
