About The Other Guys

Unlike their heroic counterparts on the force, desk-bound NYPD detectives Gamble and Hoitz garner no headlines as they work day to day. When a seemingly minor case turns out to be a big deal, the two cops get the opportunity to finally prove to their comrades that they have the right stuff.

Our take on The Other Guys

Adam McKay's 2010 action-comedy trains its lens on the cops who never get the glory: NYPD desk jockeys Gamble and Hoitz, mismatched partners stuck doing paperwork while flashier detectives grab the headlines. When a case everyone dismisses as trivial balloons into something far bigger, the pair finally get their shot to prove themselves. McKay leans into absurdist riffing and buddy-comedy friction, using the buddy-cop template mostly as a launchpad for improvised digressions and deadpan escalation. It plays best for viewers who like their laughs loose, silly and character-driven rather than plot-tight. If you enjoy this brand of loud, quotable American comedy where the jokes matter more than the case, The Other Guys is an easy watch.
