James DeMonaco's 2013 thriller builds its horror from a chilling premise: to relieve overcrowded prisons, the U.S. government sanctions an annual twelve-hour window in which all crime, including murder, becomes legal. During one such night, a family barricaded in their home must survive when strangers come for them. Part home-invasion nightmare, part science-fiction dystopia, the film uses a tight, single-setting siege to probe uncomfortable questions about class, violence and who society sacrifices. It suits viewers drawn to concept-driven horror and social allegory rather than gore for its own sake. If a lean, tense premise interests you more than elaborate mythology, this is a taut, provocative entry point.
