M. Night Shyamalan's 1999 supernatural drama follows Malcolm Crowe, a child psychologist reckoning with an unexpected tragedy, who begins working with nine-year-old Cole Sear, a withdrawn boy guarding a dark secret. Part mystery, part thriller, part emotional character study, it favors hushed tension and creeping dread over shocks, building its unease patiently through the fragile bond between the two. The mood is melancholy and restrained, more interested in grief, isolation and the things left unsaid than in jump scares. It suits viewers who like their thrillers quiet, psychological and deeply human, and who prefer atmosphere and feeling to gore. A film best approached knowing as little as possible.
