Our take on The Talented Mr. Ripley
Anthony Minghella's 1999 thriller introduces Tom Ripley, a calculating young man who would rather be a convincing fake than an honest nobody. When a wealthy shipbuilder mistakes him for a Princeton peer and hires him to retrieve his idle playboy son Dickie from Italy, Ripley insinuates himself into the sun-drenched lives of Dickie and his girlfriend. Enchanted by their world, he slides into an escalating scheme of deception, lies and murder. Elegant, sunlit and quietly sinister, it turns envy and self-invention into slow-burning suspense. It suits viewers who savor sophisticated character-driven thrillers with moral ambiguity and a seductive European setting, and don't need their villains to be simple.
