Our take on Transformers
Michael Bay launches the live-action toy franchise by dropping teenager Sam Witwicky into an ancient war between two factions of shape-shifting alien robots, the heroic Autobots and the ruthless Decepticons, with Sam holding the clue to a power both sides crave. It's a loud, large-scale action-adventure with science-fiction trappings, built around massive transforming machines and relentless set pieces rather than nuance. Best suited to viewers who want spectacle, speed and hardware over character depth, and who enjoy blockbuster excess played entirely straight. Those seeking a quieter or more grounded story should look elsewhere. A template-setting franchise opener that knows exactly what it is and delivers it at full volume, no prior knowledge required.
