Our take on True Romance

Tony Scott's crime romance, from a Quentin Tarantino script, follows Clarence, who marries call girl Alabama, makes off with cocaine belonging to her pimp, and heads to Hollywood hoping to sell it, with the drug's furious owners in pursuit. The result is a lovers-on-the-run picture propelled by snappy dialogue, sudden violence and pulpy romantic bravado. Scott's kinetic style and Tarantino's voice give it energy and swagger, wrapping a genuinely tender central couple in escalating danger. It's a great fit for fans of early-'90s crime cinema, quotable scripts and stylish, blood-spattered romance. Viewers averse to graphic violence or amoral characters should be cautious, but its cult appeal is well earned.
