Our take on Upgrade
Leigh Whannell's 2018 science-fiction thriller follows Grey Trace, left paralyzed after a brutal mugging that also kills his wife. A billionaire inventor offers him a fix: an artificial intelligence implant called STEM that restores his mobility and grants superhuman strength and agility. Grey turns those new abilities toward hunting the men who destroyed his life. Lean and aggressively physical, it pairs a revenge plot with unsettling questions about who is really in control once technology takes over the body. The action is inventively staged and the pace unrelenting. Best suited to viewers who like their sci-fi violent, contained and ideas-driven rather than sprawling or effects-heavy.
