Our take on Waterworld
Kevin Reynolds's 1995 sci-fi adventure imagines a future where the polar ice caps have melted and turned Earth into an endless ocean. A drifting mutant seafarer is rescued by a barmaid from a floating prison island, and the two flee alongside a young girl named Enola, whose back carries a tattooed map to the fabled 'Dryland.' A menacing pirate covets that secret, and the chase carries them across a waterlogged world of makeshift vessels and scavenger politics. It's big, imaginative world-building in an aquatic register, action-forward and adventurous. Best for viewers who enjoy grand post-apocalyptic spectacle, seafaring escapades and a reluctant loner hero pulled into someone else's cause.
