About White House Down

Capitol Policeman John Cale has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service protecting President James Sawyer. Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation's government falling into chaos and time running out, it's up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country.

Roland Emmerich's 2013 action thriller follows Capitol policeman John Cale, freshly turned down for his dream job guarding the president. Rather than disappoint his young daughter, he takes her on a White House tour — just as a heavily armed paramilitary group seizes the complex. With the government sliding into chaos and time running short, the off-duty cop must protect President Sawyer, rescue his daughter and hold the line for the country. Emmerich delivers the large-scale set pieces and disaster-movie momentum you'd expect, played with a knowing sense of fun. It suits viewers after a big, propulsive action ride and an outnumbered-hero siege, who don't need much plausibility with their spectacle.
